VW Jetta Throttle plate sticking
After reading you used a 750 lb impact wrench to bust out the wheel bearings on a front wheel drive car I decided to just pull the whole wheel bearing support on the VW front wheel bearing. It was not bad at all I took it up to NAPA they pressed in my new bearing which I did not even buy from them good guys at NAPA. I put the VW New Beetle front RH wheel bearing support back together and no noise. Now if I just got that torgue right on that silly wheel hub nut. Boy is the VW manual from Brantley full of nonsense on the wheel hub nut. Tighten then lossen, then rotate wheel 180 then retighten. I can see tighting then lossen then retorque after the hub is seated. What I did not see in the Brantley manual which I think should be there is to have someone stand on the brakes while you torque the front hub nut to keep a load off the CV joints even with car on the gorund the wheel still wanted to slip. Well thanks again on the VW front wheel bearing suggestions. Now I have to go find a another VW problem. My other daughters Jetta I think it is the fuel pump or regulator not sure, the car accelerates when not commanded to once in awhile, also once in awhile hard to start unless you hit the accelerator any ideas? Daughter also says car has made funny squeal once in awhile. Now I have not seen the squeal or the acceleration yet. Thanks Greg Hyatt”
First, not starting and having to hit the accelerator on any fuel injected car shows a minor problem in the fuel injection system. When you hit the accelerator when cranking the engine, that commands gas to be pulsed out of the injectors. If the car starts and runs normally this way, it’s no big deal. MANY of my customers would rather do that than spend a small fortune analyzing an otherwise OK fuel injection system. And secondly, funny squeals are either fan belts or bearings (the fan belts are a loud squeal, while bearings make a more metallic squealing noise.) And thirdly, if the car accelerates without adding extra pressure on the gas pedal, then odds are the throttle plate is sticking and unsticking itself. That’s easy to fix, just remove the air duct going into the intake manifold and spray a can of throttle spray cleaner at the throttle plate until it runs clear (it will be black in the beginning of the process.) VWs carbon up a lot on their throttles over time.
