How long do tires last?
“Hey, I drive 80 miles a day; about 70 highway and 10 local. How long do them stock tires on a new car usually last? When they do go thin, what brand tires do you recommend? by the way, i live in New York City if that helps. Thanks.”
Tire longevity depends upon how heavy your car is, how well made the tires are, AND your driving style. Since you do a lot of highway driving, they should last the longest. But how long is just guesswork from where I’m sitting, since I don’t know what you drive and what kind of tires are on your vehicle (and IF you keep them full of air all the time.) Most good tires today will last from forty to sixty five thousand miles if they’re taken care of. And as for replacements, there are a zillion brands out there these days. What you should buy depends upon what kind of ride quality you want, whether you drive in snow in the winter and want a heavier tread if you’re not putting snow tires on in the winter(BUT will get worse gas mileage with a heavier tread)and many other variables. Just make sure you buy fresh tires from a discount tire place that sells a lot of tires (that way they will be fresh.) My favorite method of buying tires is to go to a discount tire place, then throw out the cheapest tire they have, and all the REALLY expensive ones, and buy a good mid priced tire–unless you’re a drag strip guy in which case you’d want the top end tires for best traction and highest speed rating.
