Lexus RX 300 Air Fuel Sensor Replacement

Doug’s question:

I’ve been told my 2000 RX 300 needs air fuel ratio sensors replaced on the engine. They cost a lot of money. I know cars have oxygen sensors, but I don’t know anything about air fuel ratio sensors. Why are they expensive and do they go bad on Lexus cars commonly?

Answer:

Air fuel ratio sensors are really just fancy oxygen sensors. They have the ability to react much quicker than the older style oxygen sensors, so the cars can run more efficiently and pollute less. But on the down side, they cost a LOT more and often are only available at the dealers because the aftermarket guys often aren’t in gear yet for these sensors. And yes, they do sometimes go bad in Lexus vehicles, I’ve changed out a few.
