Brake Pad Dust On front Rims

James’s question:

“I see a few car on the road have zero dirt on them, yet always the front rims are dirty dark. The back rims a whistle clean. What is the cause of this and how do we prevent the front rims from becoming plagued like that?”

Answer:

That’s brake dust coming off the brake pads as they wear down. The only good thing you can do is buy quality pads that don’t leave as much dust– like Akebono ceramic brake pads. Some guys put a dust shield inside the rim, but that builds up heat and makes the brakes fade more under harsh braking. So I don’t advise anyone other than a twenty mile per hour driving granny to do that.
